Agreement of Adjectives Today you will learn how adjectives changed based on what they are describing. In Spanish, adjectives have two specific rules that are very different from English: 1) Adjectives must agree with the gender and the number of the noun they describe. 2) Adjectives are generally placed after the noun. What are adjectives? Adjective – a word that describes a noun or distinguishes it from a group of other nouns.
1) The general rule for adjective placement in Spanish is the opposite of English, meaning that adjectives will normally go after the noun.
Examples: a blue car = un carro azul a tall girl= una chica alta a tall boy=un chico alto some tall students=unos chicos altos 2) Adjectives of quantity are placed before the modified noun. Examples: Hay muchos estudiantes en la clase. There are a lot of students in the classroom. Hay dos estudiantes. There are two students. Ahora a practicar Práctica #1 Convert the following sentences to the plural. (remember the article, noun, and adjective agree in gender an number) Ejemplo: La casa es nueva. Respuesta: Las casas son nuevas. 1. El libro es interesante. 2. La ciudad es vieja. 3. El estudiante es atlético. 4. La mujer es bonita. 5. El chico es serio. 6. El tomate es rojo. 7. La chica es perezosa. 8. El ejercicio es fácil. 9. La montaña es alta. 10. El proyecto es feo. Práctica #2 Write a description of yourself using the following as a guide: 1. En general, soy-- (describe your physical appearance, 3 adjectives) 2. Siempre soy-- (describe your personality, 3 adj) 3. A veces soy-- (describe your personality, 3 adj) 4. No soy-- (describe your physical appearance, 3 adj) 5. Nunca soy-- (describe your personality, 3 adj)are very lazy. II. Mi amigo/a ideal After lunch, you will create a poster that describes an ideal friend (Un amigo/a ideal).
