El Imperfecto Today we will learn how to conjugate in the imperfect tense. The imperfect is the other form of the simple past tense in Spanish. Get ready to take notes! When do we use to imperfect tense in Spanish? The imperfect is used to describe past habitual actions or to set the scene in the past, what a person “used to” do or “was” doing 1) Actions Repeated Habitually: Activities you did over and over for a long period of undetermined time.
There are only two sets of endings for regular imperfect verbs, one for -ar verbs and one for -er and -ir verbs. Also, there are only three irregular verbs in the imperfect. No stem-changes, no spelling-changes. New endings Imperfect: Irregulars verbs (only three) Good videos Part I & II Regular ER/IR verbs in Imperfect Song! Ahora a prácticar

In reflexive constructions, the person or thing that does the action also receives the action.
Uses Reflexive Actions and Emotions:
(Yo) Nunca me despierto tarde.
aburrirse to become bored enamorarse, to fall in love (Yo) Me alegro cuando no hay tarea. Mis amigos no se aburrren en la clase de arte. These verbs can be used as 1) reflexive verbs or 2) non-reflexive verbs if the action is being done to someone other than the subject. EX: La madre baña al niño. The mother baths the child. (bañar= normal verb, the child receives the action) La madre se baña. The mother baths herself. (bañarse= reflexive verb, she receives the action) Formation Step 3- Write the reflexive pronoun before the conjugated verb. (Tú) te bañas Note: You must always use reflexive pronouns with reflexive verbs. Reflexive pronouns: Me (myself) Nos (ourselves) Te (yourself) Os (yourselves) Se (yourself) Se (yourselves) Here is an example of conjugating a reflexive verb in the present tense: Pronoun Placement
There are two places where reflexive pronouns can be placed, as seen in the example below.
In Spanish, when reflexive verbs are used with parts of the body, they take the definite article (el, la, los, las) rather than possessive adjectives. EX: Ana se cepilla los dientes después de comer. (NOT Ana se cepilla sus dientes.) Ana brushes her teeth after she eats. OJO! Remember that reflexive pronouns are needed In FRONT of the conjugated verb. Remember stem-changers in the present tense will have a stem-change in all forms except for nosotros and vosotros. Práctica 1) Go to Conjuguemos.com and log in. 2) Go to the activity PRESENT TENSE: Reflexive verbs 3) At the top of the conjugation page, check "Do not time me," then click the green START button. 4) Conjugate the verb according to the subject pronoun given. 5) You will conjugate until you have gotten through 50 verbs with 90% accuracy; if you have not reached 90% by 50 verbs, keep conjugating until you reach 75 verbs. 6) Once you have finished, be sure to click on the link RECORD/SUBMIT results next to your score, otherwise you will not get the grade. Direct object, indirect object, and reflexive pronouns are always attached to affirmative commands and are not attached to negative commands. In negative commands, these pronouns always precede the verb. Levántate/No te levantes Escribeles una carta/No les escribas una carta. NOTE: Affirmative commands- You will need to write in an accent mark if adding the pronoun(s) makes the affirmative command more than two syllables long. The stress stays on the verb stem. Diles la verdad a tus padres. No les digas mentiras. Mira tu propio examen. Míralo. No mires la hoja de tu amigo. No la mires. Ponte los zapatos. Póntelos. No te pongas los zapatos. No te los pongas. Mi madre me solía decir: ¡No hagas eso! ¡Haz lo que te dice tu mamá! ¡No hables tanto! Dile 'hola' a tu abuelita. Mandatos Formales In English, formal commands are pretty easy. You just use a base verb form (without a subject, since it’s always “you”) to tell people what they should do or should not do: Sit down! Do your homework! Take out the garbage! Be quiet! Don’t use social media in your computers! Don’t speak English in Spanish class! In Spanish, formal commands are little more complicated because we have so many ways of saying “you”:
Formas Regular -AR verbs: 1) Take the “yo” form of the present: HABLO 2) Drop the –o: HABL- 3) “Hablar” is an –AR verb, so add –E to form the command: HABLE Regular-ER and -IR verbs: 1) Take the “yo” form of the present: REPITO 2) Drop the –o: REPIT- 3) “Repetir” is an –IR verb, so add –A to form the command: REPITA OJO! Think of the verb adding the “opposite vowel”: AR verbs add an –E. ER & IR verbs add an –A Infinitive Present tense yo form Formal commands Comer Como ¡Coma Ud.! Escribir Escribo ¡Escriba Ud.! Tomar Tomo ¡Tome Ud.! Entregar Tentrego ¡Entregue la tarea! Note the spelling change because of the final –g sound How to make the plural form

Today we will learn to ask, answer and form questions in Spanish.
¿Estudia Mirna? = DOES Mirna study? You can also switch the position of the subject and the verb: Instead of Yo escucho= I listen. ¿Escucho yo? = Do I listen? The Question Words in Spanish:
Spanish Question Structure 1) In Spanish (just like in English) you use a rising intonation to imply a question. Statement: Ustedes trabajan los viernes. You work on Fridays. Questions: ¿Ustedes trabajan los viernes? Do you work on Fidays? 2) Questions which request a simple yes or no are called yes/no questions. In Spanish, these questions are formed in either of two ways: ¿Verb + (subject if expressed) + rest of question ?or ¿Verb + rest of question + (subject if expressed)?
3) Yes/no questions can also be formed by adding a “tag word” to the end of a statement. Tag words in Spanish include ¿verdad? and ¿no?. Examples:
¿ Dónde estudian tus amigos? 5) All of the question words EXCEPT HAY (is there? or are there?) get an accent so that you know that they are being used as a question. ¿Dónde vives tú? Where DO you live? ¿Hay libros sobre el pupitre? Are there books on the desk? NOTE: OJO! CUIDADO! 1) In Spanish no can mean both no and not. Therefore, when answering a yes/no question in the negative, you need to use no twice. Examples: ¿Estudias todos los días? Do you study every day? No, no estudio todos los días. No, I don’t study every day. 2) Why is there an (es) on some of these? Example: Quiénes is the plural form of quién.
3) Sometimes qué and cuáles are followed by words other than verbs. Qué can be followed by a noun BUT Cuál and cuáles cannot. Examples: ¿ Qué libro necesita Isabel? What book does Isabel need? ¿Cuáles de los libros necesita Isabel? Which of the books does Isabel need? 4) The difference between, ¿Dónde? & ¿Adónde? ¿Dónde + ESTAR = location (right now) Hint: usually followed with “en” “Estoy en la biblioteca.” RIGHT NOW. ¿Adónde? + ir = destination Hint: Usually followed with “a” “Voy a la oficina.” Going TO the office. 1.¿ Dónde estás? 3.¿ Adónde vas? 4.¿Adónde van los chicos? 5.¿ Dónde estudias? Note: We never conjugate both verbs when expressing the near future. contractions The verb to go/ir is often used with the preposition a (to).
