The subjunctive is only signaling viewpoint not whether something is actually true or not. OR UNCERTAINTY When expressing doubt, disbelief or uncertainty in the main clause, the subjunctive is used in subordinate clause to signal this. (ganar) My friend doubts that our team will win the championship. Yo no creo que mi amigo tenga razón. (tener) I don’t believe that my friend is right. Here are some phrases that often appear in main clauses and trigger the use of the subjunctive in the subordinate clause. DESIRES, HOPES, REQUEST, & SUGGESTIONS When expressing desires, hopes, requests, suggestions in the main clause, the subjunctive is used in the dependent clause to signal that the outcome is not clear.
INDEFINITE OR NEGATIVE ANTECEDENTS The subjunctive with “indefinite or negative antecedents.” All that really means is that the speaker is signaling that the phrase in the dependent clause is describing something that either does not exist or may not exist. I am looking for a student in the class that speaks Spanish. Is there anyone in this class that speaks Spanish? To form the Present subjunctive with regular verbs 1) Put the verb into indicative yo form (regular yo). 2) Drop the final -o 3) Add opposite ending Cambios ortográficos/Spelling changes - some consonants in Spanish change their sounds when followed by certain vowels. To maintain the sound of the infinitive we must change the spelling. car-> -que arrancar -gar-> -gue negar -ger-> -ja escoger -zar-> -ce empezar Se usa “qu” en vez de “c” para mantener el sonido correcto ante la letra “e”: explique NO *explice Ejemplo: EXPLICAR → explico → expliqu
¡No olvides! 4.
