II. External Assessment Paper 1 (1 hour 30 minutes): Receptive skills (30%) Understanding of four written texts. (40 marks) Text-handling exercises IB INITIO Paper 1 Reading Strategies: 1) Read the text quicky to get the main idea/gist of the reading.Don’t worry about understanding every word. Skim and get the big picture/main idea. Use strategies by looking at the title, pictures, captions, and know the main point /purpose. Who is it written for? This will help you make an educated guess. 2) Read over question carefully to know what you should be looking for in the text. Underline key words in the question and look for them in the text. 3) Remember that you do not have to understand everything written in the text. Don’t be intimidated if the text looks long or difficult! Know what key things you need to know by reading the questions carefully; then focus on those key things while reading the text. 4) Make sure you understand the instructions and read them carefully. 5) Avoid spending too much time on one question. Skip it and go back when you have completed the section. Often you will know the answer after you have answered the rest of the questions! III.
