El preterito Today, we will focus on verbs that change in spelling-verbs and translating from English to Spanish in the preterit tense. Also, on verbs ending in -car/-gar/-zar which require a spelling change in front of the é (yo form only) to maintain original sound: practicar-to practice practiqué practiced pagar-to pay pagué paid almorzar-to eat lunch almorcé ate lunch If you are not in class, or you would like to get more information about the preterite/preterito watch the following video. Here are some words and phrases that indicate specific time frames, and therefore signal the use of the preterite.
ayer (yesterday) anteayer (the day before yesterday) anoche (last night) desde el primer momento (from the first moment) durante dos siglos (for two centuries) el otro día (the other day) en ese momento (at that moment) entonces (then) esta mañana (this morning) esta tarde (this afternoon) la semana pasada (last week) el mes pasado (last month) el año pasado (last year) hace dos días, años (two days, years ago) ayer por la mañana (yesterday morning) ayer por la tarde (yesterday afternoon) Práctica 1: On the handout, there are sentences written in the past tense in English. You need to translate them in Spanish using the preterite. Do NOT use Google Translate. Look up the verbs in the dictionary or on WordReference.com. Remember: when you look up verbs in the dictionary, make sure you are looking up the infinitive and not the conjugated verb (ex. "lose" instead of "lost"). If you type in the verbs exactly as they appear on your worksheet, you won't find any results. 1. She studied Ella estudió 2. They woke up Se despertaron 3. I took a shower Me duché 4.
