There is a difference in the way that the objects of the prepositions are perceived. We are going to use the acronyms P.E.R.F.E.C.T. and A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D to learn when to use these prepositions in Spanish. LOS USOS DE POR Y PARA P.E.R.F.E.C.T. is for PARA and A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D. is for POR Use the acronym P.E.R.F.E.C.T when talking about: Purpose: “in order to”: used together with an infinitive. Ex. Estudio para sacar buenas notas Effect that something has on something else. Ex. Voy a la universidad para ser profesor de español Recipient the person or entity that receives something: Ex. Este regalo es para ti. Note: There is an exception to the recipient rule: If the recipient is receiving a “feeling” or “emotion”, then we use por. Mi amor será siempre por ti. My love will always be for you. Future dates, deadlines, or events Ex. Esta tarea es para mañana y el proyecto es para el viernes. Employment Ex. Trabajo para un restaurante salvadoreno Comparison Ex. Para un niño de tres años, lee y escribe muy bien. Toward a specific place Camina para la casa. P.E.R.F.E.C.T. is for PARA and A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D. is for POR The acronym A.T.R.A.C.T.E.D covers many, but not all, of the main uses of por. There are many idiomatic expressions that use por.
