Mandatos Formales In English, formal commands are pretty easy. You just use a base verb form (without a subject, since it’s always “you”) to tell people what they should do or should not do: Sit down! Do your homework! Take out the garbage! Be quiet! Don’t use social media in your computers! Don’t speak English in Spanish class! In Spanish, formal commands are little more complicated because we have so many ways of saying “you”:
Formas Regular -AR verbs: 1) Take the “yo” form of the present: HABLO 2) Drop the –o: HABL- 3) “Hablar” is an –AR verb, so add –E to form the command: HABLE Regular-ER and -IR verbs: 1) Take the “yo” form of the present: REPITO 2) Drop the –o: REPIT- 3) “Repetir” is an –IR verb, so add –A to form the command: REPITA OJO! Think of the verb adding the “opposite vowel”: AR verbs add an –E. ER & IR verbs add an –A Infinitive Present tense yo form Formal commands Comer Como ¡Coma Ud.! Escribir Escribo ¡Escriba Ud.! Tomar Tomo ¡Tome Ud.! Entregar Tentrego ¡Entregue la tarea! Note the spelling change because of the final –g sound How to make the plural form
Infinitive Present tense yo form Formal commands Comer Como ¡Coman Uds.! Escribir Escribo ¡Escriban Uds.! Tomar Tomo ¡Tomen Uds.! Comenzar Comienzo ¡Comiencen el examen!
What about reflexive verbs? ¡Levántese! / ¡Siéntese! In affirmative commands, all objects are attached to the end of the verb. Levante + se Levanten + se GWhat about reflexive verbs?
¡No se levante! ¡No se siénte! In negative commands, all objects precede the verb. No se levante. No se levanten. No se siente. No se sienten

Today we will learn to ask, answer and form questions in Spanish.
¿Estudia Mirna? = DOES Mirna study? You can also switch the position of the subject and the verb: Instead of Yo escucho= I listen. ¿Escucho yo? = Do I listen? The Question Words in Spanish:
Spanish Question Structure 1) In Spanish (just like in English) you use a rising intonation to imply a question. Statement: Ustedes trabajan los viernes. You work on Fridays. Questions: ¿Ustedes trabajan los viernes? Do you work on Fidays? 2) Questions which request a simple yes or no are called yes/no questions. In Spanish, these questions are formed in either of two ways: ¿Verb + (subject if expressed) + rest of question ?or ¿Verb + rest of question + (subject if expressed)?
3) Yes/no questions can also be formed by adding a “tag word” to the end of a statement. Tag words in Spanish include ¿verdad? and ¿no?. Examples:
¿ Dónde estudian tus amigos? 5) All of the question words EXCEPT HAY (is there? or are there?) get an accent so that you know that they are being used as a question. ¿Dónde vives tú? Where DO you live? ¿Hay libros sobre el pupitre? Are there books on the desk? NOTE: OJO! CUIDADO! 1) In Spanish no can mean both no and not. Therefore, when answering a yes/no question in the negative, you need to use no twice. Examples: ¿Estudias todos los días? Do you study every day? No, no estudio todos los días. No, I don’t study every day. 2) Why is there an (es) on some of these? Example: Quiénes is the plural form of quién.
3) Sometimes qué and cuáles are followed by words other than verbs. Qué can be followed by a noun BUT Cuál and cuáles cannot. Examples: ¿ Qué libro necesita Isabel? What book does Isabel need? ¿Cuáles de los libros necesita Isabel? Which of the books does Isabel need? 4) The difference between, ¿Dónde? & ¿Adónde? ¿Dónde + ESTAR = location (right now) Hint: usually followed with “en” “Estoy en la biblioteca.” RIGHT NOW. ¿Adónde? + ir = destination Hint: Usually followed with “a” “Voy a la oficina.” Going TO the office. 1.¿ Dónde estás? 3.¿ Adónde vas? 4.¿Adónde van los chicos? 5.¿ Dónde estudias?
